A U.S. Government interagency working group was convened on
December 14, 1994, to consider the global threat of emerging and re-emerging
infectious diseases. The working group was established under the aegis of the Committee on International Science, Engineering, and Technology Policy (CISET) of President Clinton's National Science and Technology Council.
Dr. David Satcher, the Director of the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), chaired the CISET working group,
which included five sub-groups with co-chairs from CDC, the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health
(NIH), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the
Department of Defense (DoD), and the State Department.
The working group's membership, which included representatives
from more than 17 different Government agencies and departments,
reviewed the U.S. role in detection, reporting, and response to
outbreaks of new and re-emerging infectious diseases and made a
number of recommendations which are described in this report.
The CISET Working Group on Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious
