The Vice President led the U.S. delegation to South Africa in May 1994
for the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as the President of that
country. The official delegation included the Vice President,
Mrs. Gore, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, Agriculture Secretary
Espy and Commerce Secretary Brown. The delegation also included
Members of Congress.
Prior to the delegation's trip, the Clinton Administration
announced a three-year $600 million trade, aid and investment package
for South Africa in an effort to support South Africans as they make
their transition to democracy.
