Inauguration of Nelson Mandela

The Vice President led the U.S. delegation to South Africa in May 1994 for the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as the President of that country. The official delegation included the Vice President, Mrs. Gore, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, Agriculture Secretary Espy and Commerce Secretary Brown. The delegation also included Members of Congress.

Prior to the delegation's trip, the Clinton Administration announced a three-year $600 million trade, aid and investment package for South Africa in an effort to support South Africans as they make their transition to democracy.
