National Science and Technology Council
The Administration has organized federal technology efforts for
greater efficiency and effectiveness. The Vice President is an
active member of the newly established Cabinet-level National
Science and Technology Council (NSTC), chaired by the President.
The NSTC sets priorities to guide federal research and
development investments governmentwide. For example, the NSTC
directed a high-level review of the three largest federal
laboratory systems: those of the Departments of Defense, Energy
and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The goal
is to ensure effective use of federal research and development
funding to meet evolving national needs in the areas of national
security, fundamental science, industrial technologies,
environmental protection, and aerospace.
