Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary

Vice President Gore has fought hard to enlist support for a sanctuary for whales in which commercial whaling would be prohibited. On May 26, 1994 the International Whaling Commission agreed at its annual meeting to create such a sanctuary in the Southern Pacific Ocean, to be known as the Southern Ocean Sanctuary. The 11.8 million-square-mile area covered by the sanctuary is a major feeding ground for many of the world's great whale populations.
